UAVs are the main source of mobilized intelligence. If used appropriately, than can been an effective early warning system for impending attacks or used as an offensive item for finding opponents weak spots. They're available on day 1 and relatively cheap to research. Especially in the early game they can be incredibly useful if you have the time to build them.
